Containers made of polypropylene (PP, marking 5 in the Mobius loop) can be used in a microwave oven. Products made of this material are in our Polypropylene packaging section and in the Trays for sealing section; some bases of cake packaging are also made of polypropylene (a pie on such a base without the dome can also be reheated in a microwave). Modern polypropylene packaging can withstand temperatures up to 300°C. Polypropylene is a heat-resistant plastic: in a microwave it will not melt, will not deform and will not release any toxic substances into the food being heated.
A product can be sterilized in polypropylene containers (PP, marking PP or 5 in the Mobius loop) at 110-120°C.

A tray is chosen by the following criteria:
By the type of material. The polymer of the tray is chosen with regard to its resistance to the product packed in it and to gas impermeability. The latter matters if you plan to use a modified atmosphere (MAP). Far from all materials are equally gas-tight. When ordering trays you should check their barrier properties if you plan to use MAP.
On our website you can see additional properties of trays: some are available as filters, some are given in the product card. If that is not enough, request a call back.
By shape and capacity:
The product must not stick out above the top edge of the tray. If you use modified atmosphere, it is better that the tray is filled to no more than 70% of its capacity. In addition, the tray can be a standard shape from a manufacturer’s line or designed especially for your task. Our specialists can be involved in designing the tray and making the tooling. We work with several packaging producers.
Auxiliary elements:
- the rolled edge of the top flange gives rigidity, helps the tray keep its shape and prevents it from twisting;
- stacking lugs are special protrusions of various shapes that keep trays from sticking together in a stack;
- stiffening ribs, usually vertical, normally of semicircular section, positive or negative, running along the whole tray. They make the tray stiffer, but reduce its optical properties.
